In the
Indian culture, respect for elders is a major expectation, requirement and a
tradition. I did not know, until recently, that this is so important that it has
been codified into FIVE specific forms:
Getting up, if you are sitting (prathuthana)
Greeting with folded palms (the classic Indian Namasthe
greeting) (namaskar)
Touching the feet (Upasangraha)
Prostration (sashtaanga)
Returning the gesture (prathyabhivaadana)
